Few people haven’t heard ofGenshin Impact, and the hit HoYoVerse game has finally come to Xbox, bringing a whole host of new players. Though it was a pretty approachable game on launch, the game has become increasingly complicated with each update, currently boasting a roster of over 90 characters for players to pull for. Its huge map and expansive storyline are more than a little intimidating for new players, and knowing where to start is easier said than done.

The gamehas been available on all platforms other than Switch and Xbox since its release in 2020, butGenshin Impacthas finally released on Xbox Game Pass. Though its 100GB file size might deter some players from trying it out,the free game offers hundreds of hours of contentto those who have the storage space to play it. Once your download is done, there are a few things you’re going to want to keep in mind as you begin your adventure through Teyvat.

What Genshin Impact Players Should Do Daily

10Complete Daily Missions

If You Want To Get The Most Out Of Genshin, Expect A Grind

There are tons of things to do inGenshin, but if you want to maximize your material and upgrade component gains, you’re going to need to commit to some daily tasks. These tasks reset at 4 AM server time, so you can complete them once a day.The list of daily activities includes:

Daily Commissions are mini-quests you get through the Adventurer’s Guild, which you unlock quickly. These quests differ in complexity but generally don’t take more than 10–15 minutes of your time to do.You’ll earn 10 Primogems, which are used for wishing through the gacha system, alongside other rewards for completing these commissions, so they’re worth the time.

HoYoLAB is a HoYo-specific content site that offers daily check-in rewards for playing any of HoYoVerse’s games. Check it out for free items.

Expeditions are passive activities that you send your characters on. They return after a specified amount of time with rewards that depend on which Expedition you choose. You lose nothing by sending your characters out and will receive things like ingredients, upgrade materials, and more.

10 Mistakes To Avoid When Playing Genshin Impact For The First Time

Finally releasing on Xbox for the first time, players can get much more out of their Genshin Impact experience by avoiding these common mistakes.

9Equip The Proper Artifacts And Weapons

Which Artifacts You Use Determines Your Build

Artifacts are increasingly important the further you get into the game, but honestly, you can almost completely disregard them at the beginning. You won’t need the minute stat boosts that they provide early on, but if you want to run some Artifacts, try looking out for a 2 or 4-piece set to equip your characters. Set bonuses provide additional effects and are always a good thing to keep in mind.

Equipment isn’t locked to certaincharacters inGenshin Impact; any character can use any weapon or artifact, so it’s tricky to know who to equip with what. Look at the main stat, the Artifact piece, or set boosts, and match it up with a character who benefits from that stat.

When you first start out, you’ll only have lower-rarity Artifact sets, and that’s okay. As you start to gather higher-level pieces and sets, look at their effects before deciding who to give them to, but also know that you can easily swap around which character has what equipped. There’s also an in-game feature that tells you what Artifacts other players are running with each character, so you can check that out if you’re lost.

8Upgrade Your Weapons

In The Same Vein As Artifacts, Upgrade Your Weapons

With the amount of lootGenshinthrows at you, it’s easy to lose track of what you have.Ensure you’re checking your inventory to see if any weapons you’re able to upgrade or equip will be better than your current one. Also, avoid investing too much into three-star weapons early on, as you’ll eventually get better stuff that you’ll want to upgrade.

Pick a weapon to upgrade for the early part of the game, but don’t spend all your materials making it the best it can be. This goes for Artifacts as well but for both three and four-star Artifacts. If something doesn’t feel right or isn’t providing the numbers you’re looking for, fight bosses or complete Domains to get better gear.

7Team Composition Matters

InGenshin, there are a few different element types that all interact in different ways, andhaving a variety of these damage types on your team will allow you to be prepared for any threat. This means you should keep an eye on the elements of each character before adding them to your team. Also, take a look at each character’s abilities.

Some characters, like thenew Geo character Xilonen, are supports that can keep your party’s HP up, apply debuffs, and set up elemental reactions while your DPS characters do damage. Others, like Zhongli, provide a bit more tankiness through defensive abilities.A good mix of support, DPS characters, and a healthy spread of different elements will allow you to face any enemy head-on.

Every character inGenshinhas an optimal build and team comp, so play around a bit when deciding who to run with your new pulls.

6Utilize Elemental Reactions

Setting Up Proper Reactions Can Be Just As, If Not More, Useful Than Physical Damage

There are seven elements inGenshin Impact, and they all interact with one another in specific ways. Not only does the combination of elements matter when setting up a reaction, but so too does the order in which you apply each element. This can be super confusing for even veteran players, so here’s a table explaining what each interaction looks like.

Burning (DoT)

Genshinhas three different types of reactions. Overloaded, Shattered, Electro-Charged, Swirl, Burning, Super-Conduct, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon are allTransformative Reactionsthat deal damage apart from the attack that triggers them.Their damage is based on the type of reaction and the level of the character doing them. Transformative Reactions can’t do Critical Damage, and their damage isn’t affected by the character’s ATK, CRIT Rate, or CRIT DMG either.

The second type of reaction is Amplifying Reactions: Melt and Vaporize. These two reactions multiply the damage of their attacks rather than doing damage on their own.The final reaction type is Aggravating Reactions, whichadd a base amount of damage to the attack, triggering them rather than multiplying the damage.

If you find yourself at a loss when playing or see a reaction name you don’t recognize, you may always check the in-game index for an explanation.

5Use The Gacha System To Get New Characters

Not All Characters Are Created Equal, So Pick The Right Banners

As most of HoYoVerse’s games are,Genshin Impacthas a gacha system, meaning that the characters you have available to you will depend quite a bit on RNG.Before you start spending your Primogems willy-nilly, decide on a character you’re really interested in.Pulling on just that banner is the most efficient way to get the character you want, asGenshin’s gacha system includes pity.

Pity is essentially a guarantee that you’ll get the characters you want. InGenshin, you have a higher chance to pull a five-star character after a certain number of pulls. Each pull costs 160 Primogems; you’ll need 1600 Primos to do a full 10-pull. Generally, it’s better to pull on a limited-time banner character to get new characters rather than the permanent banner, and thenew banner in the 5.2 updatehas a few new characters to chase.

4Spend Some Time In The Spiral Abyss

This Optional Arena Offers Primogems And Two Free Characters

Once you reach Adventure Rank 20, you’ll unlock the Spiral Abyss, which can be reached by going through a portal in Musk Reef. Fight alongside your team to clear out adds and floors in the Abyss. You’ll be rewarded after each encounter, and the encounters get more difficult the further you go.

3Check Your Achievements

You’ll Get More Primogems For All Kinds Of Stuff

There are achievements for each region in Teyvat, along with many activity and task-related achievements, and most of them have some sort of reward paired with them. Make sure you check your achievements as you play and claim your rewards, as they’re a good source of Primogems. Many Achievements can be obtained relatively passively, particularly when you’re new.

2Make Some Tasty Meals

Cooking Has A Bunch Of Benefits

Like many RPGs,Genshinhas a pretty basic cooking system, but it can be super clutch, especially in battle. The foods you make can heal you, give you buffs and resistances, and even raise your stats for a short time.AnyLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildplayer can attest to thepower of eating mid-fight, so keeping some food on hand can make or break.

When you first start cooking, you’ll need to make recipes manually, and the quality of the dish will be determined by how accurately you stop the timer. After cooking a dish enough times, you’ll unlock the ability to auto-cook it.This allows you to stack up a bunch of the dishes you like the best, so you’ll always have some on hand.

1Look Out For Oculi

These Floating Emblems Upgrade The Regional Statues Of The Seven

Each region of Teyvat has Oculi, which are floating, gem-like objects that you may collect. For example, the Sumeru region has thecute and leafy Dendroculi. After collecting them, you can return them to the region’s Statue of Seven to upgrade it.You’ll get rewards for your efforts, though you have to collect all but one Oculus in each region to fully upgrade the Statue.

If your mini-map lights up gold and a small star icon appears on it, you’ll know an Oculus is nearby.

Genshin Impactis a complicated game that will only become more complex as time goes on. For new players, there’s a lot to be confused by, but the only way to learn is by playing. Enjoy your time in Teyvat, and don’t get burnt out playing this truly massive game.
