10Nell Is The Bent-Neck Lady
The Haunting Of Hill House (2018)
Completely unexpected and devastatingly cruel, it could easily be argued that the Bent-Neck Lady’s reveal is the best horror show twist of all time. For the first part of the season where Nell’s history is explored, the audience learns that the girl has been tormented since she was a child by the horrifying image of a Bent-Neck Lady, a ghostly vision that would visit her in her dreams (or so the family thought).

Most viewers expected the lady to be an eerie presence in the haunted house where Nell and her family once lived. The Haunting of Hill House, however, is more contorted than initially imagined. In the episode that rebuilds the most important moments of Nell’s life to better understand the tragic circumstances of her premature death, the show returns to her cursed childhood home and surrenders to the spirits in it.

With a chord wrapped around her neck, the young woman lets herself fall and subsequently breaks her neck, revealing that for her whole existence, she had been haunted by nothing more than her own death. The moment isone of the most brutal deaths in horror TVever.

However, the son was the one who had committed the crimes. Later on, Eleven unknowingly banished him to the Upside Down, after she had put her trust in him and he betrayed her. El’s actions transformed him into the monstrous entity that in the present terrorizes Hawkins.

8Van Survived
Yellowjackets (2021-Present)
InYellowjackets, the fate of one of the crash survivors, Van, completely flips the narrative. Throughout the series, it’s believed that the character tragically died after being mauled by a wolf. The viewers are led to believe that the story of Van had ended there, her life taken before her time. However, the second season of the show reveals a fully grown-up Van, played by Lauren Ambrose.
This revelation adds a layer to the enigma that surrounds the past of the survivors. The fact that Van is alive and well also serves as a catalyst for the unraveling journey of Taissa. Furthermore, it reminds the viewer that nothing in the TV series is final, not even death, leaving the audience on edge and questioning the true nature of the survivors' past, what happened to them, and what they are hiding.

7Ellie Has To Be Killed To Find A Cure
The Last Of Us (2023-Present)
One of the most gut-wrenching twists in the history of horror TV shows occurs inThe Last of Us,when the public realizes that the only way to create a cure for the virus that has been devastating the post-apocalyptic world of the show is for Ellie to die.Ellie is an immune teenage girl, who embarks on a journey with Joel, a middle-aged man, in order to find a cure for the virus.

American Horror Story (2011-Present)
American Horror Storyhas a gift for creating a tense-ridden atmosphere as it gradually unveils profoundly upsetting mysteries and plays with the viewer’s understanding of the show.Among all the plot twists it has, however, the one in the Murder House edition, the first season of the show, is probably the most unexpected as well as the most upsetting to learn about. Throughout the season, Violet struggles with her dysfunctional family and relationship with Tate, one of her father’s patients. The revelation that she has been dead for several episodes completely changes her journey.
After a suicide attempt, Tate tries to save her life, and he apparently succeeds.Or at least that is what the audience and Violet are led to believe. However,in one of American Horror Story’s best episodes, the viewer discovers that Violet has actually died and ended up haunting the house like many others before her. The twist exposes the sinister nature of the murder house, where ghosts are unknowingly, or not, trapped in an endless cycle of suffering.

5The Infection Is Inside Everyone
The Walking Dead features many twists throughout the show. However, the most horrifying of them all is also the most hopeless. The zombie virus that seemed to only affect the people who had been attacked and bitten by the walkers infiltrated much more deeply into the human world. The reveal, which Rick had already learned about in the season 1 finale from Dr. Jenner at the CDC, reaches the viewer and the rest of the group after Shane, who is stabbed to death, comes back as a zombie in season 2.
The twist is a dreadful discovery, as it means that everyone, regardless of what they do or not to protect themselves, is eventually destined to become one of the walking dead because they all carry the virus. This revelation alters the stakes, making survival feel even more out of reach. If up until then, perhaps the audience and the characters were wishing for a hopeful conclusion to the insane outbreak, the realization suggested that humanity is now at the mercy of a new, dark world.

4"Shut Up And Dance"
Black Mirror (2011-Present)
Black Mirroris known for its dark and eerie atmosphere and profound themes explored, as the TV show touches upon uncomfortable subjects. However, one of the mostdisturbing twists and episodes ofBlack Mirroris “Shut Up and Dance”. For the entirety of the story, we witness through the eyes of the main character, a kid, how a mysterious organization is threatening him and other people into performing certain actions or else they will reveal their secrets. In the case of the protagonist, it’s a video of him pleasuring himself.
Most of the people familiar withBlack Mirrorprobably know that something deeper was going on.As the story unfolds, the conclusion reveals that the group of blackmailers are acting as “vigilantes,” and, regardless if their victims followed through with their plans or not, they were always going to expose their crimes to the world. Furthermore, the seemingly innocent protagonist the viewer supposedly empathized with was culpable for pleasuring himself over photos of children. The twist is still one of the most shocking in the history of television.

3Agent Cooper Was Inhabited By Bob
Twin Peaks (1990-1991)
Twin Peakswas ahead of its time. The series, known for its absurd and surreal plot twists, deserved a finale that could honor the entire story. The conclusion, in fact, reveals that Agent Dale Cooper, the main character, is controlled by the malevolent spirit known as Bob, a sinister presence wreaking havoc in the small town of Twin Peaks. By the end of season 2, Cooper went from being the hero of the story to another pawn of supernatural forces.
The twist provided a cliffhanger conclusion that left the audience in shock and doubt about the future of the character for more than 20 years. It also altered the viewer’s perception of Cooper, making them question whether they ever truly knew him and to what extent his actions were heroic or manipulated by external, evil forces. It’s a heartbreaking realization that one of the designated “good guys” of the show has fallen prey to the dark forces surrounding Twin Peaks, reconfirming the exploration of duality and good vs evil.

2Buffy’s Death
Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
Buffy The Vampire Slayerwas, unsurprisingly, one of the most beloved and popular TV series in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The series went on to become a cult classic, and the main character is one of the biggest reasons why it is so iconic. Brilliantly witty, incredibly brave, and compassionate, Buffy was a role model to everyone who watched the show. That is why, when the season five finale premiered, and at the time, it was believed to be the last season, people were left in shock.
In an attempt to put an end to the threat of a demonic dimension taking over the world and protect her sister Dawn from having to do it herself, Buffy sacrifices herself. As much as the show was known for its dramatic predispositions, no one expected the beloved main character, a girl of barely 20, to die at the conclusion of her arc. However, the twist perfectly matches the character’s courageous and selfless nature, as had already been shown in season 1. Thankfully, however, the series was picked up for two more seasons.

1Sophia Was In The Barn
If the revelation about how the virus infected everyone is the most startling twist, the most devastating certainly is concerning Carol’s daughter, Sophia. For half of the second season, the young girl is missing. While the group found refuge in a farmhouse with a family willing to host them, the mother never stopped searching for her. However, they eventually find out the girl was inside the mysterious, locked barn of the house all along, where the family kept their beloved alive even though they had been turned into walkers.
As much as it was too beautiful to be true to believe that a kid in thehorrorworld ofThe Walking Deadwould survive on her own in a forest, Carol, Daryl, and the audience all held on to small fragments of hope for her survival. However, the moment is a reminder of the brutal reality of the apocalypse, that does not spare anyone. There’s no more room for hope or denial.
